Sketch One’s signature 10 yrs anniversary. There was a time when Chinese characters were the rage, from tattoos on basketball players to tramp stamps. Sketch was desperately looking for something fresh. It doesn’t help he was living in Beijing, China. A chance trip to a Chinese mosque where Arabic scriptures were done in Chinese calligraphy style gave him the idea. With a Q’uran as the source, this signature was refined thrice until it appeared on numerous album covers as the designer. When asked about his logo and SBTG’s similar Arabic influence, Sketch replied, “I’m not gonna waste my time contesting who came out first, Mark’s a very talented dude and I’m a big fan but put them (the logos) side by side and you tell me, which one is dope.” A natural step would have any designer prints his/her logo on T-shirts but Sketch refused to follow suit and kept his on Hello stickers where he distributed and pasted during his travels. That’s about to change. 10 yrs after he first designed it, Sketch One will release a 21 PIECES ONLY commemorative edition. Sketch is pretty hush hush about it but we reckoned it’s not gonna be your average white Tees with black print bullshit. Stay tuned. - Kate D.
